언쟁 벌이기를 좋아하는 사람들이 있습니다. 당신은 어떤가요? 

어떤 사람들은 자신의 관점이 옳다는 걸 증명하기 위해 기를 쓰고 싸우는가 하면, 재미 삼아 가볍게 말다투기를 즐기는 사람들도 있습니다. 둘 중 어떤 경우든지 간에 그들이 언쟁을 그만두도록 하거나 이에 관해 당신이 할 수 있는 말은 없을 것입니다.

언쟁이 극으로 치닫는 것을 목격하고 이를 멈추게 하거나 혹은 논리적이고 합리적인 결론으로 끌어가려고 한 적이 있나요? 그러한 시도는 성공적이었나요, 아니면 오히려 더 화나게 하고 일을 꼬이게 만들어 격한 싸움으로 치달았나요?

만약 당신이 싸우기를 좋아하는 사람이 아니며 언쟁보다는 새로운 가능성을 찾는 것을 더 환영하는 입장이라면 이 상황에서 그저 미소를 지으며 이렇게 세 번 말하세요. “당신이 옳습니다. 제가 틀렸네요.” 

당신은 타인에게 동조하는 것이 아니라 그저 그들의 관점에서는 그들이 옳다는 것을 인정하는 것일 뿐이며, 당신의 의견에 동의하지 않는 그들을 용인하는 것입니다.

이렇게 말을 하는 것은 쉽지만 그 말이 품은 에너지를 조절하는 데에는 연습이 필요할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 이 말을 냉소적이거나 화난 어투로 뱉는 것은 전혀 도움이 되지 않기 때문입니다. 당신이 하는 이 말은 완전히 허용적인 태도여야만 합니다. 그런데 이 방법이 과연 통하긴 할까요? 다음 번에 누군가가 당신과 싸우려들 때, 기억해 두었다가 한번 사용해 보세요.
