당신은 종종 자신이 원하는 것을 포기하면서 원치 않게도 다른 사람을 위해 많은 것들을 하곤 하나요?

다른 사람들은 항상 의무감과 죄책감을 이용해 당신을 통해서 자신들이 원하는 것을 얻곤 합니다. 왜 그런가요? 그 편이 그들의 삶을 손쉽게 만들 뿐 아니라 당신이 지금껏 일반적으로 그들이 요구하는 걸 들어주었기 때문입니다. 그렇지만 그 반대면 어떨까요?

타인을 도와주는 것은 훌륭한 일입니다. 그렇지만 누군가의 요구사항이나 요청에 대해 흔쾌히 내키지 않을 때에는 거절을 해도 된다는 것을 알고 있나요?

다음 번에 누군가의 부탁에 무거운 느낌이 들 때에는 웃으면서 가볍고 유쾌한 어조로 이렇게 말해보세요. ‘저를 떠올려줘서 정말 감사하지만 정말 미안해요. 지금 제겐 좀 어려울 것 같네요.’

그런 다음에 웃으면서 대화의 주제를 바꾸세요. 당신은 누구도 반박하기 어려운 사실에 대해 말한 것일 뿐입니다. 이유나 변명을 대면 괜히 같은 대화가 계속 길어지기 때문에 피하도록 하세요. 사람들이 당신을 압박하는 것만 같은 느낌이 들면 다시 웃으면서 말하세요. ‘미안하지만 좀 어려울 것 같아요. 좋은 기회지만 저보다 더 적합한 사람 꼭 찾을 수 있을 거에요!’
